SOMALI MARRIAGE CEREMONY- Unique Expensive Culture!
Marriage is very much regarded and spells family
value in Somali community. Marriages can either be arranged or be as a result
of a personal choice. Either way the groom’s family elders set an appointment
with the bride’s family. In the nomadic society the groom’s family brings a
designated herd of camel and goats to the bride’s family as a dowry and in the
urban the dowry is in the form of money. This is to respect the bride and her
family and it reduced the meaningless divorce as it is not easy to let go with
such a precious women.
These cultural dances usually occur after a wedding.
Wedding are perhaps one of the most important aspects of the Somali culture. A
wedding denotes not only the union of two souls but the relationship between
families and more importantly two tribes.
Elders from the groom’s family send a delegation to
the bride’s family to request their daughter’s hand for marriage. The bride’s
family elders welcome the delegation from the groom’s side. Mainly discussions
take place tentatively for three days. The first day the delegation presents
the motive of their visit. On the second day, they discuss generally on the
situation at hand. On the third day, the engagement ceremony is prepared the
wedlock (engagement) takes place. The engagement or “Meher”, usually takes
place a few days before the wedding or at times on the same day. The wedding
arrangement and agreements are all settled on the day to prepare for the big
day. But before the jubilant groom can lay hands on his beautiful bride, there
are many hurdles to cross and many gifts to bestow upon her family. The
weddings have various ceremonies. On the wedding day, many goats and a camel
are slaughtered and plenty of rice, meat and drinks are served for both males
and female attendants. This is when the formal Islamic wedding agreement takes
place. A further important tradition is exchange of gifts between the two
family and friends. The bride and the bride’s maid are taken to beauty salon.
The bride wears a white wedding dress and atter women “dirac” with their hair
covered with a scarf. In the afternoon celebration takes both the family’s
residence and the new house. Food and drinks are served and tradional
entertainment takes place i.e. “Buran -bur”. In the evening the bride is
escorted to her new home by bridesmaid and her family and friends. The ceremony
continues till late night. Cakes, meat called “nyirnyir” and soda are served to
guests. The groom and his family pay for this.
It is a tradition that new bride remains in her home
for a week after wedding. A helper stays with her during this period. On the
third day, the grooms family visits them and drinks and food are served. On the
seventh day is women’s party for the bride and it signifies her being welcomed
to family way. She is adorned with “shashi” scarf, making officially the end of
wedding. She is mentored and showered with wise counsel and to be breed another
generation that defends the tribe of her husband.

FEEL the DANCE Orange BEAT ya STREET 2013! The memorable moments!!!
Kenya Youth for Change from coastal regional will go
down in history of choreography as one of the most promising dance troupes to
have ever been assembled in the country. Having won a number of dance
competitions, the moment to crown the best had actually come. It had been a
long journey to get grand finale and the team would never know what was going
to happen.
KYFC as is normally abbreviated is a team consisting
young men and women whose prowess in flexing body parts systematically and
rhythmically is not of this world. During the year’s finale, the teams had
shown what choreography is all about and express their message clear of
clinching the title again. The team had worked very hard through the
elimination stages beating clear other contenders on stage. Their
determination, confidence, hard work and self-belief had put them at the
crescendo of the competition.
I was at the gallery to witness the young men do
their magic on stage.it was a night full of amazement all were overjoyed by the
developments .Said Farhia, a cousin’s fiancée who had never accompanied us
before but that night; was short of words but just a wow word would be heard!
KYFC would have forced their way into the final but
their effect onto me surely builds my Confidence that anything is possible as
long as there is commitment and the desire to have it. The conviction that came
into my mind is that we have to run on confidence in order to create
environments conducive for success. I also understood that one does not have to
sit in an office clad in a suit and tie to make ends meet. As one entertains
himself/herself, the end product can be tapped to generate income and earn a
living.
This troupe has created an environment where one
takes time to enjoy life, learn different talents and nurture youth’s dreams to
come true. While here one gets the ability to execute world class talents and
for KYFC dancing crew will be a significant legacy to live a lifetime.
With the two teams at the final Dabz and Tsunami for
them to claim the title. ”Championship of Orange beat ya street”. The Judges
had a chance to crown the impressing teams for the final preparation. For FBI; the team with a female fan base at
the ceremony, it was almost clear that they would clinch the crown. The chants
were enough to take them through the top spot while on the other hand their men
took authoritative position and opinion shaping role of the choreography. Looking
at the brighter side, this was the team utterly propelled on this position
owing to the two facts, (the home base factor as well as the large home
supports and possession of modern facilities history with better exposure).
Other than this nationwide competition, KYFC has
also been involved in multiple competitions, but it’s a privilege too to them
by making the ends meet. Great entertainers to be watched out for their
perfected crafts, moves and the ability to put a crowd on toes too effortlessly
will see the team soar to greater heights. The team however did no clinch the
title due to the stiff competition from the other opponents.
Way Forward; KYFC has learn from the best and need
to evaluate some of their weakness and formulate an appropriate strategy to
come to the peak of the entertainment list. With this in mind they stand a
chance to make that which is thought to be impossible to pass. We can only keep
moving despite the adversities encountered in the past competitions. Action
points include; searching for advance technique and modern facilities, create
spirit creativity and enjoy the challenges posed at every step. We can, build a
legacy by becoming better dancing professional and connect you with the world!
To sum up, may I salute the KYFC dancing crew, fans
and other volunteers for a job well done and by playing a strong role in
defining another chapter of dancing history.
This is a once in a life time opportunity and their dream come true. They can
now talk about many specific ways in which the habits and discipline learned
and practiced in the dance helped to self-regulate and use successful
strategies to succeed in life.

Yes!
Everything is possible if you believe you can. Your mind will often trick you in to avoid doing things out of your comfort zone. But that's when you need to step up, accept the challenge, take risks and tell yourself "Yes I can...."

Remembering the golden days
I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everyone.
I believe hate is easy, love takes courage.
Quote of the day
Don't anger your parents or families in order to please other people. Those other people did not spend their lives building yours.

"During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.” -Nelson Mandela
“I
learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over
it. I felt fear myself more times than I can remember, but I hid it
behind a mask of boldness. The brave man is not he who does not feel
afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” ~ Nelson Mandela from Long Walk
to Freedom, 1994 #LivingTheLegacy
